What to do With a Formal Living Room?

Formal Living Room some months back, the public has been encouraged to see the first-floor reconfiguration into a 30-year-old colonial-style manufacturing home in Fairfax Station and to converse with the layout team in Sun Design Remodeling who envisioned and implemented the solution. While visitors valued the job’s far-reaching scope, it was the diverse, balanced, yet exceptionally initial interior layout that got folks talking in the end.

Formal Living Room Ideas

The house was filled with interesting ideas, one attendee commented. I went home and began re-thinking my entire first floor. The response wasn’t a surprise also to Andrew Smith and Madelynne McCarthy, who bought the original model home in 2002.

Typical of the style, the current first-degree room configuration has been primly arranged: a living area and dining area to the right of the entrance foyer, a den into the left, a kitchen and living room reachable from a back archway, a little powder room off the foyer, a rear deck throughout the back kitchen slider. Pretty basic, Smith says, but after living in the home for 14 years, we can see the bigger possibilities. In fact, whilst the 4, 000 sq foot home was largely satisfactory to the owners, with time the first floor’s little rooms, narrow doors, and builder tier finishes had come to appear dated as the couple appeared ahead to retirement years.

Choose the Best Designs

We wanted that a personal residence that reflected our preferences, Andy Smith explains. A home we could enjoy. As longer occupation became a regular family discussion, the manufacturing home’s limitations suddenly became all too glaring. The kitchen was space constricted and rather gray, Smith says. There was a little island with a cooktop that did not provide a useful working surface. Doors to the hallway cupboard and powder area obstructed traffic at the kitchen archway, which was too narrow. The kitchen cleaning area was visible from the family area.

Overall, we imagined a warmer, more aesthetically pleasing interior. Several space improvement options were also explored. We’d plan to remove the back wall and add 800 sq legs, Smith recalls, but whenever we appeared at our real requirements, the plan did not make economic sense. Fundamentally, we just wanted a bigger kitchen and pantry, and an interior more suitable for entertainment. We just were not sure how to accomplish this. Fortunately, last year, that a seminar by Sun Design Remodeling unveiled that a brand new way of thinking about the home.

Conclusion

The seminar motivated us also to explore ideas of repurposing space inside the home’s existing footprint, Andy says. I suddenly realized that we were getting almost no usage from our 200 sq foot formal living room. The way people now use their houses has changed drastically, there’s that a movement towards open, interactive spaces, and less interest in free interior walls. As a change agent, 1 of Durosko’s first steps is also to help owners envision a space utilization plan which will better support how they would like to utilize their home in the foreseeable future.
